Avalon Fishing Pier
≈ 1.5 miles — 5-min drive from Wright by the Beach
A classic 1958 Outer Banks pier — fish, grab a snack, or just watch the sunrise stretch down the coast.
A Kill Devil Hills landmark since 1958, Avalon Fishing Pier stretches roughly 700 feet into the Atlantic at milepost 6 on the Beach Road. It's one of the Outer Banks' classic wooden fishing piers, drawing anglers after spot, bluefish, drum, and mackerel depending on the season, along with plenty of folks who just come to watch the sunrise.
You don't need to fish to enjoy it — a walk out to the end is a nice way to get a different view of the coastline, and the pier house typically has a small shop with rods, bait, snacks, and pier-access passes. Check current hours and pier fees before you go, as these can shift seasonally.
