Bodie Island Lighthouse
≈ 14–16 miles — 25–30 min drive from Wright by the Beach
Black-and-white striped icon of the Outer Banks. Climb it in season for a view from Oregon Inlet to the sound.
South of Nags Head near Oregon Inlet, the black-and-white striped Bodie Island Lighthouse has guided ships since it was completed in 1872. It's part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore and remains one of the most photographed lighthouses on the Outer Banks, with a small visitor center and keeper's quarters on-site.
During the warmer months, visitors can climb the lighthouse's 200-plus steps for sweeping views over the marshes, dunes, and Oregon Inlet. Climbing is typically offered spring through fall on a seasonal schedule with timed tickets, so check current dates and availability before planning a climb — the grounds are generally open for photos and walking year-round.
